This Apartment’s Water Smelled Like Rotten Eggs — Here’s What Fixed It

Last Friday, I got a call from a resident living in a gated community near Medavakkam.

“It’s not a leak or drainage issue,” she began. “It’s the water itself. Every time we turn on the tap—especially in the bathrooms—it smells horrible. Like rotten eggs.”

This wasn’t the first time we’d heard of this.

“We thought it was maybe from the pipes,” she continued, “but the smell is there even in the overhead tank. Guests have started complaining. And honestly, it’s getting embarrassing.”

The Real Culprit: Sulphur Compounds in Borewell Water

As soon as she described the smell, I had a good guess — hydrogen sulfide gas, a by-product of decaying organic matter that’s common in some borewell sources. It creates that telltale rotten egg odor and can show up in both hot and cold water lines.

“It’s worse when we switch on the geyser,” she said. “That’s when the stink is strongest.”

That made sense. Heat releases more of the trapped gas, which is why the smell intensifies with hot water.

Step One: Check the Source of Water

I asked them to send us a raw water sample directly from the borewell line, before it passed through any tank or filter.
We tested it for:

  • Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S)

  • Iron

  • Sulfates

  • Anaerobic bacterial activity

Results confirmed: high levels of H₂S and slight iron contamination. The tank and pipelines also had a faint black slime — often seen with bacterial activity.

The Fix - Odor Removal Water Treatment System

They didn’t need a new pipe system or room fresheners. What they needed was proper aeration and oxidation-based odor removal.

We installed a dedicated odor removal treatment unit at the inlet point of their apartment line. It included:

  • Pre-aeration to release trapped gases

  • Catalytic media to oxidize and neutralize hydrogen sulfide

  • Backwashable filters for longer life

“Will this eliminate the smell?” she asked.

“Yes,” I replied. “Once the source gas is oxidized and filtered out, the water will be clean, odorless, and safe.”

The Result: Fresh Water in Just 2 Days

Two days after the system went live, she messaged again.

“The difference is unbelievable. The smell is gone — even from the hot water. Our bathrooms feel fresh again. We can actually use the tap water without cringing.”

Her family — and her guests — noticed the change immediately.

Takeaway: If Your Water Smells Bad, It’s Not Just a Nuisance — It’s a Sign

Rotten egg smells, blackish slime near taps, or a metallic odor from borewell water are all signs that your water needs treatment, not masking.

At Water Sparks, we offer specialized odor removal systems for homes and apartments. No more embarrassment. No more guessing games.

Just clean, clear, odor-free water — the way it should be.
